The setup, start to finish

It takes about five minutes the first time and under a minute after that. The one thing worth getting right is where the camera sits — everything the analysis produces depends on it.

What you need

  • A phone that can record 1080p60

    Any recent iPhone or Android handset. An ultra-wide lens helps but isn't required.

  • A rigid mount at 2.5–3 m

    A tall tripod, a wall bracket, or a balcony rail clamp. Rigid matters more than expensive.

  • A clear view of the full court

    Centred behind the near baseline, nothing blocking the far service line.

  • A Veritas account

    Sign in with Google or a phone number. Academies can invite their players in.

High enough that the far court still resolves, central enough that the court sits square in frame. Rigid matters as much as high — a mount that sways adds motion the pipeline has to work against.

Step by step

Six steps, once

  1. 01

    Mount the phone

    Put the phone on a rigid mount roughly 2.5 to 3 metres up, centred behind the near baseline, pointing down the length of the court. Landscape, main lens. The whole court should sit in the lower two-thirds of the frame.

    Height is the setting that matters most. Too low and the far half of the court compresses into a few pixels; too high and players occlude each other less but the shuttle gets small. Rigid matters as much as high — a mount that sways adds motion the pipeline has to fight.

  2. 02

    Frame the court

    Open Record. The app runs a court-detection model against the live preview and locks on in about two seconds. You'll see it move from “Detecting court…” to “Court detected”.

    If detection struggles — unusual line colours, heavy glare, a partially occluded baseline — you can tap the four court corners manually and carry on.

  3. 03

    Pass the setup check

    Recording stays locked until the geometry solves. When something is off, you get an instruction rather than an error code.

    This gate is deliberate. A narrow tool that is right almost all of the time is worth more than a broad one that is right most of the time — so when the setup is wrong, the app would rather stop you than hand back numbers it doesn't trust.

  4. 04

    Record the session

    Hit record and coach. Capture settings lock themselves, and around thirty minutes is a comfortable session length.

    The phone's motion sensors log any bump to the mount while recording, so if the tripod gets knocked the analysis knows to re-check its reference points rather than silently drifting.

  5. 05

    Upload

    The recording uploads in resumable chunks as soon as you stop. It keeps going in the background, and survives a lost connection or the app being closed.

    A half-hour session at 1080p60 is a large file. Chunked upload means a dropped connection costs you the last chunk, not the last twenty minutes.

  6. 06

    Read the stat sheet

    Analysis runs on GPU and typically returns in about ten minutes for a half-hour session. The result lands in the app as a full breakdown.

    Shots, rallies, shot types with confidence, measured speeds, the coverage heatmap, and a capture-quality panel telling you how much to trust the run.

What the app tells you, and what to do

The setup check speaks in instructions rather than error codes. Each of these maps to a specific thing the geometry solver couldn't resolve.

Corners unclear — re-tapThe four court corners couldn't be resolved. Tap them manually on the preview, working clockwise from the near-left corner.
Clean camera lensHaze or a fingerprint is softening the image enough to hurt shuttle detection. Wipe the lens and re-frame.
Move camera back or upThe court is overflowing the frame. Step the mount further behind the baseline, or raise it.
Tilt up / mount higherToo much floor in the bottom of the frame and not enough of the far court. Raise the mount rather than tilting steeply if you can.
Turn your phone sidewaysThe phone is portrait. Veritas always records landscape — the app interface itself never rotates, so just rotate the handset.

You can always override the gate and record anyway. The session will still be analysed — the capture-quality panel on the resulting stat sheet will simply tell you how much to trust it.
